BIOGRAPHY
Alana D'Agostino (b. 2003) is a Toronto-based figurative painter. Working primarily with oil and watercolour paint, her practice centres an intimacy in observation. Through her work, she explores how focused attention can reveal the emotional and affective qualities in scenes and objects. Emphasizing precision and the quiet that emerges from close attention, her work resists passive viewing, instead inviting an engagement grounded in labour, care, and mindfulness.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Silence is a gift; a mark of affection, an impression on a surface. It is in its stillness, in its mist, where we find ourselves. Open your hands and hold it in your mind.
My work is a devotion to my subject, an exploration of the quiet that comes with careful observation. It is rooted in process, with an emphasis on detail and accuracy, drawing from my own photographs as reference. I work in thin layers that lend to one another, capturing the nuances of light as it diffuses and softens, evoking a sense of haze. It is about the effort – the labour, not a passive reading of an image; where its quietness and stillness is essential to understanding. In my work, I seek to convey tenderness and the intimacy that comes with truly seeing.
